(twitters) best dog beaches

Posted on by .

I grew up in Carine back when there was still a swamp down the road and people rode their horses around its perimeter on a Saturday afternoon. Yes youngsters, this actually happened. And I recall my dad taking my little brother and I to Mettam’s Pool in Trigg wearing only a navy blue flannel hat (it was the 70’s people) and faded knee length shorts which is probably why his back now looks like a human mole exhibition.

We’d pack our 1971 Mini with the usual stuff, beach towels, umbrella, esky and then we’d take the unusual stuff, samosas and jalebi’s. This was pretty much the only indication that mum and dad had just arrived off the plane from India.

I also remember getting stung by a jellyfish. It was the only time we ever to Scarborough. But I digress.

(Twitters) best dog beaches. Right. The backstory. My Rotty Atticus is almost 13 years old. And my amazing vet Michael (Mt Lawley/Inglewood Veterinary Surgery) told me it’d be good for Atti to swim in his old age. Arthritis and all that. But where? So I put it out on twitter. And dog owners came to the (beach) party. With pics. So here are some of WA’s best dog beaches according to me and my twitter mates. Best to post this while Atti is still alive and swimming hey?

BENNION BEACH, TRGG

Yea I get you can’t run full tilt through the sand because the rocks will slash your feet to shreds but it’s sheltered, the dogs are all friendly and a geriatric like Atti won’t collapse from exhaustion walking from the carpark to the beach.

QUINNS DOG BEACH, QUINNS ROCKS

Who doesn’t love a good dune hey? This doggy beach is unbelievable. Thanks to @Gabikate and her dog Milo for tweeting this gorgeous photo.

NAVAL BASE HORSE (AND DOG) BEACH, KWINANA

Very cool. Knowing about this place makes me wish I had a horse. Cheers to @laurenseccull for the photo.

SCARBOROUGH DOG BEACH, SCARBOROUGH

Definitely one of the most popular dog beaches in Perth. Even Boxer Danny Green got involved in the topic on twitter.

I won’t bang on about the jellyfish bite I got as a youngster at Scabs except to say it was ironic that @JellyFishCourt should tweet me this photo.

LEIGHTON BEACH, FREMANTLE

Lots of suggestions for this beach (thanks @Tiger_Cookie @AmandaGohr) but no-one tweeted a decent picture so I had to pillage Trip Advisor.

PEASHOLM STREET DOG BEACH, SCARBOROUGH

This was my favourite beach when my old Rotty Tyson was spritely and fit. But seeing as how Atti’s legs give-way after too much walking I doubt he’d make the long walk to the beach. But it’s pretty special and @cory_gale says there are lots of bins, doggy doo bags in the dunes and a doggy hose so your car isn’t a beach when you drive home. Plus it’s a few kms long which is a bonus. My neighbor @lizdoherty69 reckons it’s also great for body boarding and she wouldn’t take her dog or kids anywhere else. And trust me, you don’t want to argue with Liz.

Yes, I know there are HEAPS of other amazing dog beaches in and around Perth so if you want to tweet me a pic of your favourite (@lisa_fernandez) I’d be more than happy to add it to my blog.

But I’ll leave you with a pic of Rog (my dad) on a Northern suburbs beach circa 1970’s. GOLD.
